The psychology of selling is really the psychology ofinfluence. And influence is simply a factor of communication.

There’s something peculiar about the title of this blog.Have you spotted it yet? If not all will be revealed in a few moments!

OK let’s cut to the chase. You have a product or servicethat you wish to sell – yes SELL – use the appropriate language. There’s atendency to shy away from using the SELL word and rather more coyly labelingwhat we do as MARKETING.

Marketing is a process. Sending out a million Tweets to yourrandom Twitter list may well come under the banner of marketing BUT it isinfinitely more useful to actually make a SALE. A transaction where moneychanges hands- this is the action you need to be focusing on.

Why? Because few people other than therapists (!) make this level ofeffort – and guess what? You will be remembered as being thoroughlyinteresting. Aside: it’s a lot easier to BE fascinated than to fake it!

If you believe that you’ll need 40minutes in order to do a presentation tell them. Ensure that all decisionmakers are involved and take control of all distractions. TV turned off, kidsout of the way etc

Accidents invariably happen when decision-making is compromised. Driving 100k’s down the freeway is not the time to have a moment of indecisiveness. Hit the indicator and then take that turn, there’s a reasonable chance you’ll negotiate the journey safely.

The autobahn of life operates similarly, and yet so many of its participants lack the decisiveness to negotiate its perilous journey and myriad of choices with clarity and confidence.

Due diligence is given as an excuse to postpone making a decision. Procrastination is a nice sounding word that has cancerous implications.

So many poor souls live lives of quiet desperation, not because of a scarcity of choice, but rather because opportunities are so often disguised as scary monsters residing in the location of the discomfort zone.

It has taken a lifetime to reach this status quo we find ourselves inhabiting, and we are well equipped to justify staying there, regardless of how insanely uncomfortable it really is.

Regret is a mostly pointless indulgence. However it is an emotion that modern societies seem to encourage.

Crass confessions of celebrity excess are the fodder of tabloid press. Brands need to be protected, and therefore carefully crafted interviews conveying remorse are channeled through crocodile tears for the consumption of the masses.

The masses in turn tend to confuse this manipulation as an example of the risk of poor decision-making. More often than not, it is a weakness in actually making decisions quick and often that leads to paralysis and unfulfilled ambition.

Questions precede all actions. There is a remarkable tendency for the mind to find the resources to achieve emotional and concise goals. Ask the right questions and be prepared to make decisions that may initially appear to be taking you in the wrong direction, and almost imperceptibility miracles will seem to manifest.

The girl you fancy may rebuke your advances, but significantly less often than if you’d never asked! Apparently super models are rarely approached by mere mortals as conventional wisdom is that they can do better! The irony of course is that there’s less competition for the brave soul willing to act!

Traveling to the other end of the globe, for something as frivolous as a holiday can so easily and rationally be postponed, indefinitely. The money could be spent in so many better ways…and yet, this mindset is what creates the sense of apparent lack.

Creating a big enough vision, a big enough WHY will usually facilitate the HOW.

Be prepared to get it wrong. (There is no wrong by the way, it’s a perception, some of the greatest experiences in your life would never have happened if you hadn’t taken a ‘wrong’ turning somewhere back on the road that led you to the big payoff)

Start a business. Risk some money lose it learn from the experience and move on better educated and equipped to take advantage of the next opportunity that comes your way.

Take some piano lessons, enroll in art class, buy the car that symbolizes your mid life crisis, sell your house and travel the world for two years.

Is such unbridled hedonism just an excuse for irresponsibility? That’s for you to debate, but I would play the devils advocate and state that the craving and pursuit of the sensible is what defines the height of the ceiling of all potential accomplishment.

Think of the worst decision you’ve ever made in your life and I’d

venture to suggest it ended up becoming the greatest lesson you

ever learned.

If you have any regrets I’d also guess it was a factor of failure to actually make a decision that led to the regret.

So next time the apple of your eye demands a treat, the lawn needs mowing, the out dated TV needs replacing, or an acquaintance invites you to a function try occasionally being spontaneous- make the decision on the spot, don’t say you’ll think about it, or try, or will check with your boss, husband, lawyer…just a Yes or No will suffice.

Just don’t blame me if it all goes pear shaped….

Can You Have Too Many Social Media Connections?

Why too many connections may be hurting your engagement

It would seem logical to assume that having a million twitter followers -5000 Facebook friends and untold numbers of connections on Linkedin etc would be more beneficial to your social and business voice than none. And you’d be right.

However the law of diminishing returns kicks in pretty quickly in the absence of engagement.

I find it curious to note that people with thousands of Facebook connections (hardly friends) can post numerous times and receive negligible ‘likes’ or comments – and yet those with just a few hundred have the opposite experience.

If you are connected via some tenuous common interest (you both like Lady Gaga for instance) then it’s probably not appropriate to post personal comments on their page BUT it is hugely engaging to “like” their comments

Trust me –it’s the law of reciprocity – if someone frequently ‘likes’ your posts – you’ll feel compelled to start reciprocating

This will lead to you checking out their ‘info” and before long adding the odd comment – and volla dialogue is initiated

This does not take long. 5 minutes per day can connect you to dozens of real people and as they say it’s a small world –once genuinely connected this can lead you into some fruitful experiences

If you are a centre of influence already then it’s a different ball game. Charlie Sheen doesn’t need to develop individual relationships with his Twitter followers – they are connected for their own voyeuristic reasons BUT more than likely 95% of your connections are tokenism at best and a puerile attempt to appear popular at worst –

It’s a simple philosophy but you become infinitely more interesting when you become genuinely interested!

Big blog title but unambiguous I hope!

It’s definitely NOT intelligence – We all know really smart often eccentric types wandering around in odd socks looking disshevled and not entirely on the same wave length as the rest of the world. Apologies of course if that’s you!!

It’s probably got little to do with hard work – there’s a whole generation that might disagree with that comment but in the world we live today there as so many fewer obstacles to success than in days of yore.

President Obama and Hilary Clinton have certainly shown that opportunity at the highest level can be attained regardless of ethnicity and sex (I’m not saying it’s equal opportunity )

Let’s not go through an inexhaustible list of phantom reasons for failure –

What are the Key Distinctions that really make the difference

Massive Action powered by an energy and mindset of unbridled focus will surely help BUT for most of us mere mortals who perhaps don’t measure up to the Tony Robbins of this world – this is not an innate trait

OK are you ready for the reveal!

You need a targeted LIST! Not 4-5 friends or anonymous Twitter connections but 10K or 20K opt in subscribers.

You need a marketing funnel to tap into the list

That’s pretty much it!

I’m guessing at this point you’re ready to throw something at the dog….’cause this probably doesn’t help!

Look, all jokes aside – that’s it – really.

Relying on organic traffic to find your beautiful website and then expecting a significant number to click and purchase something on a first visit – is, well a bit delusional – Sorry

It doesn’t really matter what you are selling – as long as you have a list to tap into.

If I have a list of 10k who are interested in handyman activities (hint: perhaps they subscribe to similar magazines) – you could pretty much promote any new fangled DIY device to this list via an email and sell a truck load.

The Problem is that too many people are focused on trying to find a product or business to market instead of…..

The Solution – finding a market and then selling them what they are passionate about

Of course you will need to invest some time and energy learning and applying the skills to make it happen but you can save yourself a ton of wasted time chasing rabbits and end up with nothing

Master these two skills and you will earn 100 times that of a phd graduate!!

A slightly provocative headline I know, but buyer beware, this is a business industry that claims as many losers as winners

Set Up Fees – Upfront

A Franchise fee can set you back between $200k – $6 million As an example McDonalds’ restaurant requires a MINIMUM down payment of $500k of non borrowed money – they also require the balance $1 million+ to be paid off within 7 years!

Time!

Many franchises require the franchise owner to work full-time in the business, they are not looking for absent investors so you cannot have other business interests, and you may need to commit yourselves to 20 years in the business.

You have to consider whether the actual time commitment is worth it. Are you looking for an opportunity to leverage your time or are you buying a job? This time investment can be pretty unglamorous work including doing the accounts, setting up tables, and dealing with a myriad of day to day customer problems

Location!

Location absolutely matters and often circumstances beyond your control can change the value of your location or indeed the cost. For example shopping centres/malls can change their rules, or renovations can dramatically reduce the required traffic to your business

Cashflow!
